♟️ Another great reason to play chess!

Interesting research from the University of Southampton suggests that mentally stimulating activities, including puzzles and brain exercises, may help improve cognitive function in older adults, with some participants no longer meeting the criteria for cognitive impairment after 12 months.

While the study wasn’t specifically about chess, it’s another reminder of the value of keeping our minds active.

Chess challenges our memory, concentration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. It also brings people together, regardless of age or experience.

You don’t have to be a grandmaster to enjoy the benefits of a good game. Sometimes, just sitting across the board from someone is reason enough to play.

Keep learning. Keep thinking. Keep playing. ♟️

⏰ Round 1 at 10:00 AM
♟️ 5-Round Swiss • G/30;d5 • US Chess Rated
💵 $25 entry
🍀 Complimentary entry for Aransas County 4-H Chess Project members
Scholastic Sections:
♟️ Primary (K–3)
♟️ Elementary (4–5)
♟️ Middle School (6–8)
♟️ High School (9–12)
We’ll also have an Open section for players outside the scholastic divisions — so don't be shy, parents! 😁
🏆 Trophies for 1st–3rd in each scholastic division and the Open, plus 1st-place scholastic team trophies.
Scholastic players from any school or area are welcome (hint hint Rockport-Fulton ISD). Players may also play up into a higher grade division. Active US Chess membership is required.
Sections may be combined for pairing purposes depending on turnout, but players will remain eligible for awards in their originally registered division.
⏳ Registration closes Friday, October 23 at 8:00 PM Central, or earlier if capacity is reached.

The Aransas County 4-H Chess Project is back for another year, and our first meeting is TONIGHT!

📍 Aransas County Extension Office

This year we’re putting a stronger emphasis on learning, improving, and preparing for tournament competition. Whether you're brand new to chess or already competing, come ready to play!

We’ve got a lot planned this year, including six US Chess-rated tournaments right here in the Coastal Bend. ♟️🏆

Haven’t signed up for 4-H yet? Contact the 4-H Clubs of Aransas County - Texas A&M AgriLife Extension at (361) 790-0103 to get enrolled and squared away.
