It was a warm, slightly overcast summer morning in Old Tasslefoot Village. We setup the tables and boards and powered up the fans underneath a covered boat garage. The shade and light breeze offered a welcomed respite from the heat.
Though the season’s warm embrace can be cataclysmic for cooler weather wishes, the morning hours tend to preserve the rubbing of lamps. As time elapses, we hope to have more folks stop by for some games. We have tables and chairs for 12 players, which we’ll readily expand upon as needed.
Where’s the Chess?
Gus, the Club’s Mascot, enjoys the summer sun whilst keeping his eyes peeled for potential players as they cruise through the village. Come get your photo with Gus! He dresses up fairly often, depending upon the time of year. While you’re at it, pull up a chair and try your hand at some chess.
Pictured here are some of the younger club players, getting down to business.
Some folks wonder how old you have to be to start playing chess. It depends upon an individual’s interest in the sport. The Third Coast Chess Club’s youngest member is 3 years old. Parents or guardians are encouraged to learn with their young ones. You’re never too old to learn either, so if you’re on the fence and have a lame go-to excuse for not playing, drop the act and come play. It’s a game. Have fun. Meet some folks.
We have some dedicated players that inadvertently improve simply because they have a genuine love for the game (and a strong desire to win). They also show up on a regular basis. Consistency counts!
One great part about chess (there are many) is that age doesn’t matter. You can hold it down with folks who are generations younger or older than you are. Be warned though, once you start playing on a regular basis, you may start seeing the world in terms of chess. That’s how you know that you’ve probably become a chess player for life.
See you at the board! Stay tuned for a posted calendar of recurring events.
