2026 National Middle School Championship

This month, two members of the Third Coast Chess Club will be competing in the 2026 National Middle School Chess Championship.

The tournament will take place May 15–17 at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in Round Rock, just north of Austin. The event is expected to draw hundreds of middle school players from across the United States for a full weekend of nationally rated competition, side events, analysis rooms, vendors, and chess activities.

The National Middle School Championship consists of seven rounds using classical time controls of G/90; d5, meaning each player receives 90 minutes for the game with a 5-second delay added before each move. These longer time controls require players to maintain focus, stamina, calculation accuracy, and composure through demanding games against strong opposition from around the country.

For young players, events like this are about far more than trophies and ratings. National tournaments expose competitors to different styles of play, higher levels of preparation, and the overall atmosphere of large-scale competitive chess. It is also an opportunity to build confidence, meet other chess players from across the nation, and create memories that last far beyond the final round.

Both Third Coast Chess Club members have spent considerable time preparing through local tournaments, club meetings, tactical study, puzzle work, and practical tournament experience. Their participation reflects the continued growth of scholastic chess in South Texas.

One of the most valuable aspects of attending national events is what players bring back home afterward. Exposure to stronger competition often accelerates improvement and helps strengthen the entire local chess community through shared experiences and lessons learned.

The Third Coast Chess Club is incredibly proud to see local players competing at a national championship event and wishes both competitors the very best as they take on one of the biggest scholastic tournaments in the country.

Good luck, play boldly, and enjoy the experience.
